DeMint Amendment Defeated

Posted on 6/22/2012 by Chris Heiss in Checkoff

Another closely watched vote was on the amendment offered by Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC). The amendment would have prohibited mandatory promotion and research orders, or checkoff programs.

NCTA, along with 90 other agricultural producer groups, signed onto a letter encouraging Senate leaders to oppose this amendment, and the amendment was resoundingly rejected by a vote of 79-20.

Now the action shifts to the House, where a combination of tighter budget limits and the unpredictable nature of many new members, should make the debate a nail-biter. The Committee expects to unveil its starting point for the debate next week and to consider the bill in committee the week of July 11. We'll keep you updated on its progress.
